xxxxxxx ## Write an introduction to an informative and factual blog post titled "The Untold Truth About the Piazza Del Popolo" ## For those who haven't been able to visit Rome, the Piazza del Popolo is a large square with an obelisk at its center. It is one of the most well known squares in Rome and has been around since ancient times. The square has many buildings surrounding it, many having cultural significance. I was able to explore this square and learn about its history as well as what makes it so special. The history of this square encapsulates many events, from the inception of the obelisk to the well-known paintings that hang in museums all over the world. It is a very interesting and beautiful piece of art that has been preserved for thousands of years and I cannot wait to tell you about it. The Piazza del Popolo and its surrounding buildings and statues was built in 142 BCE by Marcus Agrippa, who was Octavian's right-hand man. The square was part of a dedication to emperor Augustus as well as his mother, Atia. After Agrippa's death, the square was converted into a marketplace for the lower class citizens of Rome. It was changed back to an open public space more recently through various restorations. The Vatican Museum is located on this square, as well as many other important churches and monuments. Such as Santa Maria Sopra Minerva which is one of the major domes in Rome. The museum is very large with over 8 million objects inside, some can be seen more easily than others. I had a chance to see some of these pieces up close and personal, I will tell you about them later in this piece. When this museum was first built, it was a custom for the public to make a wish at the well in the center of the Piazza. The well is still there, but now it is only a decorative piece, broken and full of trash. One artifact that has been found in this museum is an ancient Egyptian sphinx! The sphinx can be found near the entrance to this museum and is very interesting because it has been brought from Egypt all the way to Italy. The sphinx can be seen as you walk into the hallways of this stunning palace. The paintings that hang on the walls of this museum are very famous, some pieces are even more recognized than others. Many of the paintings were painted by Renaissance artists, some are not that well known. One particular painting is "The School of Athens" by Leonardo da Vinci, this is one of his most famous works. The painting shows many great philosophers writing letters on a board at the back of a room. This painting was very expensive to have made, it cost around 150 lire (~$250 USD). The overall value for this museum is around 3 billion dollars. I had the opportunity to see many of these pieces up close and personal. I was able to see an interesting piece about Julius Caesar, one that illustrates him killing himself after being defeated in battle . cfa1e77820
